Chief Wapello Days, which was established in 1935, returns this weekend. This year’s celebration features several contests for youngsters, from the familiar to the unusual. A kids pedal pull, hot wheel races, an Oreo stacking contest, Big Wheel races and a Power Wheels demo derby are planned for Saturday.

Tim Knutson helps organize the annual celebration. He says the kid who avoids getting stuck usually comes out the winner of the derby, but it can also come down to who still has battery power left in their small plastic vehicle. He adds it’s as much fun for the spectators as it is for the participants.
