The Columbus Wildcat baseball team (0-19) enters the postseason still in search of their first victory of the season. The Wildcats were on the short side of the ledger in all 19 regular season games this season, and begin postseason play tonight in the Class 2A District 10 bracket versus the West Branch Bears (12-13 overall).

The Wildcats are led by their senior captain Mitchell Griffin, who has alternated between shortstop, third base, and pitcher all season long. Griffin leads Columbus with nines runs score and 11 stolen bases in 13 attempts. Freshman Able Mena has been another bright spot for the Wildcats. Mena leads the team with 12 base hits, 10 singles and two doubles, and is also nine for nine in stolen base chances this season.

The Bears’ up and down regular season came to a close on Wednesday with a doubleheader split against the Tipton Tigers, dropping game one 7-0, and winning game two 8-1. Senior Brad Arp leads the Bears on the mound and at the plate. His 40 innings pitched leads the team, posting a team best 5-1 record, and a 2.60 earned run average, the second best mark on the team. Junior Hunter Wargo leads the Bears in total hits (23), batting average (.390), runs scored (15), and stolen bases (12).

First pitch of tonight’s Class 2A District 10 quarterfinal game between the Wildcats and Bears is set for 5 p.m. at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman.
