During this 4th of July holiday weekend extra law enforcement officials will be monitoring Iowa’s roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, six people died on Iowa roads in car crashes during the 2013 Independence Day weekend, and 512 were killed in crashes nationwide during that same time. Of those deaths 39 percent, or 199, occurred in wrecks that had at least one driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety encourages drivers to have a plan before celebrations begin and don’t risk driving under the influence.
