A heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. this evening across Southeast Iowa. Heat index values up to 108 are forecast with temperatures in the lower 90’s, in addition dew points will be in the mid- to upper-70’s.

According to the National Weather Service, people are at higher risk for heat illness because this is the first episode of extreme heat for the season there hasn’t been an opportunity to acclimate. People are reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and remember to check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly. Those seeking air conditioning may consider visiting a local library, community center or shopping center.
