After taking the bronze medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling championships early last week, Highland’s Drew West took on the field at the at the 2015 USAW Junior Men’s freestyle championship. Competing at the Fargodome at Fargo North Dakota, West battled in the 113 pound weight division against 66 of the top high school wrestlers in the country.

West opened the tournament with a bye in the first round. His second round match was a touch more difficult, pinning Jacob Maurer of Pennsylvania in the first 13 seconds of the bout. Round three was dominated by West as well, defeating Triston Santos of Hawaii by technical fall 14-4. Competition became tougher in round four of the championship, as he edged Drew Hildebrandt of Indiana by a 7-5 decision.

West suffered a setback in the quarterfinal round, falling to Brandon Courtney of Arizona by a 20-14 decision. His tournament came to a close in his first wrestle back match, losing by technical fall 12-2 against Paxton Rosen of Oklahoma. West finished one round away from placing at the tournament. Rosen went on to finish fifth in the freestyle tournament.

Drew’s brother, Bryce West, didn’t participate in the freestyle championships.
