Cancer patients don’t get to take a month off and a new Relay for Life team doesn’t plan to either. Prairie Power is holding a luminary event, which will include a survivors lap and caregivers lap, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. tonight at the Mid-Prairie High School track. Team Captain Bob Freeman says their goal is to line the inside of the track with luminaries, each representing a cancer survivor, someone who is fighting the disease or someone who has lost the battle.

Freeman, who lost his daughter to cancer in 2014, adds they hope to hold an event each month to continue raising money for research and remind those dealing with cancer the team is continuing the fight.

All of tonight’s proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. The 20 Washington County Relay teams have raised over $75,000 this year. Prairie Power has raised nearly $13,000.
