The Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute is now empty. The facility’s doors closed Tuesday night, the final day of Fiscal Year 2015. Funding was not provided for the institution in Governor Terry Branstad’s budget for the current fiscal year.

Under the Health and Human Services Budget bill put together by the Iowa House and Senate, the MHI would receive funding to operate as it was July 1st of 2014, when it provided adult acute psychiatric and dual diagnosis substance abuse care. State Senator Rich Taylor shares that in his opinion, passage of the bill was the legislature’s biggest achievement of the 2015 legislative session, but he thinks the governor will stick with his decision to close the institute. State Representative Dave Heaton says he’s guardedly optimistic.

Branstad is currently reviewing bills passed during the session and has until the end of the day Monday to sign them.
