Protect yourself from mosquito bites this summer by covering your skin and eliminating standing water. Last year, 15 people in Iowa tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness West Nile Virus. Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health explains only about 20% or people develop symptoms, which include body aches, vomiting and fevers. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, less than 1% of human infections develop a serious neurologic illness.

Fisher reminds people mosquitoes are active from dusk to dawn and to cover skin with long sleeves and pants, as well as an insect repellent. Repellents with DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus are recommended. West Nile Virus can be spread to other animals, like horses. Following recent rainfalls, people are reminded to turn over items in yards where water collects, like birdbaths, tires and kiddie pools.
