July is UV Safety Month and people are reminded to protect themselves from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Danielle Pettit-Majewski, director of Washington County Public Health, reminds people that sunscreen is one way to protect against UV rays. All skin types should use sunscreen and Pettit-Majewski recommends using an SPF of at least 15, but not much higher because it may cause a false sense of security. SPF stands for sun protection factor. Sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours. Pettit-Majewski adds it is better to put bug spray on after sunscreen.
