For the first time in four years, the Washington Demons will have a new starting quarterback under center. With Daryn Sebelius preparing to leave for Iowa Central Community College to compete for the Tritons’ starting quarterback position, the Demon coaching staff used this weekend’s Southeast Iowa Football Camp to usher in a new era.

Washington football coach Garrison Carter has penciled sophomore Ryan Reighard as the Demons’ new signal caller, a position he is still molding into. “The interesting background on Ryan (Reighard) is until this weekend, he hadn’t taken a snap from the quarterback position in a game.” Carter said, “He has been a running back coming up and has had a lot of success since he was young but has never played the quarterback position.”

Carter adds since the end of last season, Reighard has bought into the idea of replacing last season’s all-state quarterback, “He has been doing something to get better every day,” Carter said, “Whether it is sitting in my office and drawing up plays, or throwing the football, he is extremely invested and it showed this weekend looking very comfortable for a kid who has never been under center before.”

Replacing Sebelius, an all-state quarterback from last season, is one of the holes the Demon coaching staff is needing to fill this season. Last year’s leading rusher Jacob Hennigan has graduated, along with tight end Thomas Bump, guard Tommy Peterson, and Kyle Collier at center.
