Another successful softball season for the Sigourney Savages (24-10 overall) enters the next stage tonight. The Savages begin Class 1A Region 5 tournament play tonight, hosting a quarterfinal bout against the Moulten-Udell Eagles (5-14 overall) at Sigourney High School.

Sigourney surpassed last year’s win total of 23 prior to postseason play, earning their 24th victory of the season on Thursday in a 9-2 triumph of the Tri-CountyTrojans. A contributing factor in the Savages’ regular season success has been the all around performance of senior Jordan Carter. Carter has recorded 19 of the Savages’ 24 wins as a pitcher, throwing 177.1 innings this season. In 28 appearances, she has posted an earned run average of 2.08, and has a strikeout to walk ratio of 5.5 to 1. Carter also leads the Savages in batting average (.563), on base percentage (.584), slugging percentage (.874), total hits (67), doubles (28), and runs batted in (50).

The Eagles earned a spot in the regional quarterfinals by defeating Tri County 9-7 on Monday in Thornburg. The victory gave Moulten-Udell back to back wins for the first time all season, entering the postseason off of a 13-0 victory over the Harmony Rockets (0-17).

First pitch of tonight’s Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinal clash between the Savages and Eagles is set for 7 p.m. at Sigourney High School.
