Late inning rallies continued to hurt the Washington Demon softball season (4-25 overall) Tuesday evening. As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons were in Fairfield last night completing their Southeast Conference series against the No. 13 Trojans (22-7 overall).

The two teams started game one of the doubleheader on June 22, but a storm bringing an abundance of lightning forced the delay to last night. Action was picked up in the bottom of the third inning with one out, nobody on, and Fairfield leading 3-0. The Trojans weren’t able to push any additional runners across in the third despite loading the bases against Demon junior pitcher Mackenzie Knutson. The Demons followed in the top of the fourth with their best offensive inning of the evening, freshman Megan Strabla, Morgan Brinning, and Megan Mitchell each recorded a hit and scored a run in the inning, tying the conference clash at 3-3. The score would hold until the bottom of the seventh when Trojan junior Kelsey Roberts ended the game with a walk off single which scored senior Mackenzie McClure for a 4-3 victory in game one.

The two teams went scoreless through the first two innings of game two. The Demons led off the third inning with a single from Strabla. She rounded all the bases and scored on a passed ball to give Washington a 1-0 lead. The one run lead was held in tact until the fifth when the Trojans turned a lead off double from senior Karley Williams into the tying run heading into the sixth inning. After Washington went down in order in the top of the inning, Fairfield strung together three straight singles and platted three runs for a 4-1 lead. The Demons’ seven, eight, and nine hitters were retired in order in the seventh inning, earning the Trojans a 4-1 victory.

The losses drop Washington to 4-25 overall this season, and keeps the Demons winless in 14 conference games this season. The Demons return to the diamond on Thursday, traveling to Mount Pleasant for a Southeast Conference showdown against the Panthers (14-12 overall).
