Heavy rains Thursday morning forced the postponement of Winfield-Mount Union’s postseason baseball game last night. The Wolves (14-11 overall) are now scheduled to face off against the Notre Dame Nikes (14-8 overall) this evening in the Class 1A District 10 semifinal at Winfield-Mount Union High School.

The Wolves’ have turned a corner recently, winning their last three games heading into tonight’s district semifinal clash. Winfield-Mount Union is led on the diamond by a group of junior athletes. Garrett Baker leads the Wolves in innings pitched (42.1) and posts a team best earned run average of 1.82. Matthew Niebuhr lead W-MU in batting average (.432), slugging percentage (.649), and on base percentage (.553), triples (2) and home runs (2). Ross Vantiger tops the team in runs batted in (25) and stolen bases (23). Winfield-Mount Union opened the postseason on Tuesday with a 10-8 triumph of the New London Tigers.

The Nikes made it to the district semifinal after back-to-back victories over the Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders (1-18 overall) 3-0 in the regular season finale and 9-3 in the district quarterfinal matchup.

First pitch of tonight’s Class 1A District 10 semifinal between the Wolves and Nikes is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Winfield-Mount Union High School.
