The work in the classroom has paid off for the Washington Demon softball team. Despite a 7-27 overall record this summer, Washington was one of only two teams in the Southeast Conference to place a member on the league’s All-Academic team.

Demon seniors Kolbi Breard and Anna Wheeler were two of the five members of the All-Academic Conference team. In order to be named to the All-Academic team, a student must be in her junior or senior year of high school with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher. The entire team earned the state academic award, posting a team cumulative grade point average of 3.75.

Head coach Angie Schrader is proud of her team’s academic success, “It’s always academics first and then softball, and they live by it.” Schrader said, “They will come in early during the offseason and say I have this homework to do so I can only be here for 20 minutes. Great, you are here, you are doing this and you know you have homework to do.”

The other three members of the Academic All-Conference squad were from the Mount Pleasant Panthers, including Hattie Leichty, Jena Stukerjurgen, and Morgan Fraise.
