Through the Water Quality Initiative, limited funds are available to help farmers install nutrient reduction practices, such as cover crops, no-till or strip till, or using a nitrification inhibitor when applying fertilizer. Cover crops help reduce erosion, reduce nitrate leaching, suppress seasonal weeds and can help increase soil organic matter and improve health, quality and productivity of soil. The cost share for first-time users of cover crops is $25 and no-till or strip till are eligible for $10 per acre. Farmers using a nitrification inhibitor when applying fall fertilizer may receive $3 per acre. Farmers using these practices for the first time will receive priority consideration.
