Tuesday ground will officially be broken for the new Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center. The $7.2 million auditorium project is being funded by a $2.5 million Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant, an $800,000 Vision Iowa grant, a $1.1 million bond referendum, $50,000 from the City of Washington, $15,000 from the Washington County Board of Supervisors and more than $2.6 million in private contributions. The facility will be attached to Washington High School but will be available for both school and community use. The groundbreaking ceremony begins at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.
