The Washington City Council met Tuesday night for a special session meeting at the Washington Public Library.

In a special session meeting last night, the Washington City Council again discussed sewer work in the city and issues with inflow and infiltration. The council decided to not allow reimbursements, councilmember Kathy Salazar added Iowa Code prohibits it. The request for reimbursements came following public comments at the last council meeting when a homeowner described sewage backing up into their basement and their efforts to mitigate the problem.

The council did reiterate that work on finding and fixing problems in the sewer system will remain a top priority as they move forward.

Last night the council also considered moving funds from road projects to further investigate the sewers. The council elected to defer such action pending more study of the system. City Administrator Brent Hinson explained that if the council were to move the proposed $250,000 from the roads program they would not be able to afford to do any further street reconstruction work.

It was also explained, the city will be working with a different engineer on future sewer investigation due to dissatisfaction with the recent firm regarding speed of service.
