After having his freshman season delayed by redshirt, 2014 Washington graduate Alex Coker is ready to make an impact this fall for the University of South Dakota Coyotes. Coker, an all-state safety and running back during his high school career, was recruited by the Coyotes coaching staff as a defensive prospect.

“They ended up recruiting me as a safety and I have put on about 20 pounds since I have been here.” Coker said, “They have moved me down now to outside linebacker. It has been an interesting change but it is definitely the position that best fits me.”

Coker, who finished his high school career with 92.5 tackles and six interceptions defensively, could see some playing time for USD this fall.

“Right now I am sitting second string on defense behind a redshirt senior.” Coker said, “The guy has been here a long time and knows the defense and the coaching staff very well. Each day I go into practice trying to get better at my skills, especially playing a new position.”

You can hear an interview with Coker on this week’s PM Sports Page, Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. on KCII.
