Reports of influenza in Iowa have already been investigated by the Iowa Department of Public Health this fall. The seasonal flu vaccine is available locally and IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk recommends getting the shot to protect yourself against the flu this season. According to the Center for Disease Control, as many as 90 percent of flu-related deaths in the United States happen in people ages 65 and older. Last flu season in Iowa, there were three influenza-associated pediatric deaths. It is recommended to get the flu vaccine each year.
