Very few high school football players had a week four performance like Sigourney-Keota senior running back Peyton Crawford had against the Pella Christian Eagles Friday. Down 21-6 in the first quarter, the Cobras outscored the Eagles 46-14 after the first 12 minutes of play, running away with a 52-35 victory.

Crawford was the catalyst of the Cobra rushing attack, rushing for 357 yards and six touchdowns, to help Sigourney-Keota improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Class 1A District 6. Crawford, this week’s Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, said his team started seeing momentum shift in their favor during halftime as the Cobras trailed 28-20, “We went into halftime and got all our adjustments made.” Crawford said, “Everyone knew where to go and it was the first time ever where everyone knew what was going wrong and what needed to be fixed. We came out in the second half and lit them up.”

The Cobras would outscore the Eagles 32-7 the remainder of the football game. This isn’t the first time Crawford has put up big numbers against a district foe. Last season, he rushed for a career-high 381 yards and seven touchdowns during a 55-42 victory over the Highland Huskies last October.

Crawford and the Cobras have a tough test this week, hosting the undefeated Mid-Prarie Golden Hawks (4-0 overall; 2-0 Class 2A District 5). Mid-Prairie has allowed fewer than 70 yards rushing in shutout wins over Louisa-Muscatine and West Burlington.

Crawford says tomorrow’s game will be quite a challenge for his team. “They are just a good team, very solid.” Crawford said, “They are all around big and they know football. They are 4-0 but we are going to go in and try to get payback for last season.

Mid-Prairie upended Sigourney-Keota 38-20 in Wellman last season. Crawford recorded 159 yards rushing and two scores in last year’s game with the Golden Hawks.

Kickoff tomorrow is set for 7:30 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage from Sigourney High School begins with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIRadio.com.
