Points came at a premium Friday evening for Southeast Conference rivals Washington and Fairfield. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Washington Demons (3-1 overall; 2-0 Class 3A District 5) traveled to Trojan Stadium for a Class 3A District 5 showdown with the Fairfield Trojans (1-3 overall; 0-1 Class 3A District 5).

With the threat of severe thunderstorms lurking, the varsity game kicked off two-and-a-half hours early. The changed start time had no affect on the Demon defense, which held Fairfield to under 100 yards of total offense. Washington came out of the district battle victorious, 23-0, after the game was called due to lightning with 6:02 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Washington sophomore Jack Redlinger set up the Demons’ first touchdown of the game in the first quarter, intercepting a Cameron Baumann pass at the Trojan 15 yard line and returning it to the 2. Sophomore Ryan Reighard scored the ensuing play on a two yard touchdown run, propelling Washington to a 6-0 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first quarter.

The score stood as the team headed into the locker room for halftime. Demon senior Jack Giardino scored the first points after halftime, scampering 11 yards for his fifth rushing touchdown of the season. Washington’s two point conversion was successful, pushing the Demon advantage to 14-0 with 7:34 remaining in the third quarter.

Washington’s defense tacked on a safety right before the end of the third quarter. The Trojans’ Jordan Reid picked of a deflected Ryan Reighard pass at his own two yard line. The very next play, the Demon defense smothers Fairifeld’s Fejon Redd in the endzone, extending their lead to 16-0.

The final points of the night were scored by Reighard, a two yard touchdown run with 6:39 remaining in the game, enhancing the lead to 23-0. Thunderstorms rolled into Jefferson County minutes later, causing the game to go into a lightning delay with 6:02 remaining in the game. After waiting nearly an hour, the team cancelled the rest of the game, giving Washington a 23-0 victory.

The win is the fourth in a row for Washington over Fairfield in their series, and the seventh win over the Trojans since 2004. Washington improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A District 5 play, while Fairfield falls to 1-3 overall and drop their district record to 0-1.

Washington is scheduled to play their final non-district game of the season next week, hosting the Solon Spartans at Case Field.
