For a second straight season, the Washington Demon football team (1-1 overall) will honor the communities local heroes. The second annual Heroes Game is set for tonight at Case Field when the Demons battle the Clear Creek-Amana Clippers (0-2 overall) in the Class 3A District 5 opener for both schools.

The Demons hosted the inaugural Heroes game last season versus the Davenport Assumption Knights. The Demons donned camouflage uniforms to honor the community’s military and emergency personnel as Washington won 45-27 to help claim a share of the district title.

Head coach Garrison Carter says the team will come out in special jerseys tonight and wants the focus of the game to not be on his team, “(This game) is about all those guys everyone talks about but you can’t recognize them enough.” Carter said, “Our armed forces, both current and former, as well as our police officers, EMT’s, fire fighters, first responders, any of those people will be honored tonight.”

Carter added you will see the local heros on the sideline during warm ups, in the locker room during pregame, on the field during the National Anthem, and will be recognized at halftime.

Washington hopes to get off to a better start to the district season, falling in last year’s meeting with Clear Creek Amana, 20-17, in Tiffin. Coach Carter says last year’s loss to the Clippers still stings. “Usually its either you win clearly or you lose clearly, the best team on the field wins.” Carter said, “Last year was one of those rare situations where we left the game thinking we were the better team and just weren’t able to execute.”

This season the Clippers are struggling to overcome the loss of 25 seniors from last year’s squad. Clear Creek-Amana is winless in 2015, being outscored 44-17 in their first two games.

Nine members of the Clipper football team are students at the Iowa Mennonite School. Junior Drake Brezina is an IMS student making an impact for the Clippers, leading the team in rushing yards with 181.

Kickoff of tonight’s Heroes Game is set for 7:30 p.m. Live play-by-play coverage from Case Field begins with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com.
