Two Fairfield police officers who fired shots in connection with a pursuit in June have been cleared in the incident. Van Buren County Attorney Abraham Watkins says the officers, Kathy Blumhagen and David Wall were justified in their use of deadly force.

The incident occurred this past June when the officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Dakota Murray, when the suspect failed to stop in Jefferson County. The pursuit ended approximately two miles south of Birmingham in Van Buren County more than 10 miles away. Watkins says Murray then attempted to drive his vehicle toward Officer Wall when he approached. Both officers fired their weapons however, no one was struck by the shots. An investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation determined the shots were lawful.

Murray was charged with eluding a pursuing law enforcement vehicle. He was convicted of the charge and is currently serving a prison sentence on the conviction.
