The Mid-Prairie and Sigourney-Keota football teams will meet again this evening under the Friday night lights in Sigourney.

This game has produced some great matchups and memorable outcomes through the years and this season on paper looks to be no different. Mid-Prairie enters tonight’s game undefeated at 4-0 for the first time since 1976 and ranked #8 in the state in the latest Associated Press Iowa High School Football Poll. Mid-Prairie has posted back to back shut outs for the first time since 2012 and has allowed just one touchdown the entire month of September. The Golden Hawks have the #2 scoring defense in all of 2A allowing just seven points per game. The defense has done a lot of scoring of its own, matching the opponents touchdown output for the year with four defensive scores.

On the offensive side of the football the running game has been impressive for the Golden Hawks. Mid-Prairie currently ranks #13 in 2A scoring 30 points per game. The Hawks are in the top 10 in rushing yards, yards per carry, total touchdowns and points. Ricky Vargas and Nolan Faselt lead the way on the ground for the Hawks. Vargas is in the top 10 in 2A with his six touchdowns and 483 yards. Faselt is in the top ten with his seven yards per carry average, he has rushed the ball 55 times for 356 yards on the year.

Mid-Prairie won this game last season 38-20. Sigourney Keota leads the all-time series with nine wins to Mid-Prairie’s six. The Savage Cobras also hold a perfect 3-0 record against the Golden Hawks in the playoffs.

On the Cobra side of the ball they had an offensive explosion last week led by KCII’s Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week Peyton Crawford in a 52-35 win against Pella Christian. Crawford went crazy against the former  top five Eagles rolling up 357 yards on 29 carries and six touchdowns, the longest of which was a 73 yard sprint. Crawford’s performance was part of a 526 yard night for Sigourney-Keota. On the year Crawford is ranked fourth in the state with 704 rushing yards and third in class 1A with his nine rushing scores. Crawford is also no stranger to success against the Golden Hawks. While Mid-Prairie may have won the game last night year, Crawford had a big night with 30 carries for 159 yards and 2TDs.

The SK offense goes beyond the tailback position. The Savage Cobras have a lot of weapons to work with. They are currently ranked #6 in the state in class 1A with 1200 rushing yards, #3 in yards per carry, #5 in rushing touchdowns.

You can hear all of the action live tonight from Sigourney High School beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 7PM on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCII radio.com.
