The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team opened up the home portion of the 2015 schedule Friday night with a win over Clear Creek Amana 27-7.

In a game you heard on AM and FM KCII and KCII radio.com the Golden Hawks got out to a fast start then dug in defensively to secure the win. The Hawks were as hot as the temperatures on a steamy night at Dwight G. Sattler Field, scoring 20 in the first quarter. In their first possession Mid-Prairie marched 63 yards on eight plays with Ricky Vargas plunging in from one yard out to give them a 7-0 lead. On the next Clipper possession CCA quarterback Dylan Sheely found Mid-Prairie’s Nolan Faselt, who picked the pass and returned it 32 yards for a score, doubling the Mid-Prairie lead to 14-0. After another Clipper drive stalled out, the Hawks pounded down the field again, this time on a seven play 65 yard drive which Karson Duwa finished by crashing into the end zone from one yard out.

In the second quarter the Clippers got some traction, aided by two late Mid-Prairie turnovers, one fumble and one interception and Golden Hawk penalties, CCA found themselves beginning a drive at the Hawks 29. They took advantage, using seven plays to drive the short field, scoring on an Aaron Akers three yard run, leaving the score at 20-7 Golden Hawks at the break.

In the second half both teams dug in defensively, and played the third quarter to a stalemate. Leading 20-7, Mid-Prairie turned away CCA on two critical defensive possessions, the first came on a Paul Hawbaker interception in the endzone, the second on a fourth down stop inside the 10 yard line. The Golden Hawks put the game out of reach midway through the final period with a solid drive that ended with Ryan Cortum throwing his first passing touchdown of the year as he found tight end Levi Duwa for a 12 yard score. From there the Mid-Prairie defense closed down the Clippers one more time to ensure the win.

Statistically, Mid-Prairie was led by Ricky Vargas on the ground, racking up more than 130 yards and a score on the evening. Ryan Cortum threw for just under 100 yards and one touchdown in the winning effort.

With the win Mid-Prairie is now 2-0 on the season. The Hawks will open up district play next Friday when they travel to Louisa-Muscatine, you can hear all of the live on AM and FM KCII and KCIIradio.com.
