Highland senior Keiffer Sexton blazed the trail for the varsity boys in Tuesday’s Washington Cross Country Invitational. Sexton, who came into the meet off of a first place finish over the weekend at the Pekin Invitational, won his second meet in four days by clocking a time of 15:38.

Sexton’s race time was a nearly full minute better than the race field, which consisted of 3A runners from Fairifeld, Fort Madison and Washington. He says while running against bigger schools is challenging, he says his biggest competition comes from runners in smaller school districts. “Honestly, my biggest competition comes from Davis County, they have a runner which is good.” Sexton said, “Columbus also has a runner, which has been pushing me as well.”

The Columbus runner Sexton is referring to is Wildcat senior Josh Keller. The two recently competed in the Keota Invitational in which Keller caught Sexton in the final 600 yards of the meet to win his first ever cross country invitational. Keller has won four invitationals in a row for Columbus, including winning the Clear Creek-Amana Invitational on Monday.

The Washington Invitational rewarded the top 25 runners with medals and several area schools leave the meet with hardware. Sigourney’s Tyler Crawford recorded the meet’s fourth fastest time at 16:52. Highland’s Caleb Brase finished in fifth place with a time of 16:54. Keota’s Turner Klein ran the seventh fastest time, at 17:16. Klein teammate, Logan Sieren, ran the ninth fastest time at 17:28.

Sigourney’s Will Flannagan came in 13th place, Highaland’s Josh Brand placed 19th, Highland’s Jared Gringer was 22nd, and Sigourney’s Luke House was 24th.
