An English tradition for automobiles from London to Brighton is returning to southeast Iowa this weekend.

The seventh annual Red Flag Horseless Carriage Tour will be going from New London to Brighton this Saturday. Washington County Supervisor Abe Miller invites people to check out the cars as they tour the area and mimic the traditional London to Brighton trip in England. The event is a nod back to 1896 when the speed limit for automobiles was raised from four miles per hour to 14, removing the need for a man on foot with a red flag to be in front of the cars.

The cars in this weekend’s event were made before 1927. The tour will be stopping in Brighton Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for lunch before going through Wayland on the way back to Mt. Pleasant for dinner.
