The Lone Tree Lions suffered their first loss of the season last Friday night, falling to Belle Plaine 34-14.

The Lions will look to right the ship tonight when they host Van Buren, Keosauqua for their homecoming game. The Lions enter play led by Trey Pierson at quarterback who is six of 13 through the air during the first two weeks of the season for a total of 105 yards and a touchdown. Pierson’s favorite target through the air is Caleb Christian with two catches on the season for 78 yards and a score. Lone Tree’s bread and butter is their ground game, led by senior Jared Hudson who has amassed 215 yards through the season’s first two games on just 36 attempts.

The Van Buren Warriors enter play still in search of their first win of 2015. Van Buren has dropped two lopsided contests on the year, in week one to Lynnville-Sully 53-6 and last Friday in Montezuma to the Braves 57-8. Senior quarterback Will Mertens is nine of 19 through the air for 101 yards on the season. His favorite target is wide receiver Robert Barker who has three catches for 32 yards. On the ground Van Buren is led by Mertens with his 124 yards and two scores on 37 attempts.

As part of homecoming festivities this week students at Lone Tree have participated in theme days including window painting at local businesses, pajama day, USA/patriot day, class color day, and school spirit day. The school district will hold a homecoming pep rally, king and queen coronation and homecoming parade as part of the celebration this afternoon prior to the game. Kickoff between the Warriors and Lions is set for 7PM at Lone Tree High School. The traditional homecoming dance will follow the game.
