The time to manage flowers growing around the house and in the garden is now, late summer and early fall. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists provided tips on managing different types of flowers, including lilies and peonies.

To divide lilies dig up the clump and separate the bulbs, then replant the bulbs immediately, four to six inches deep for large bulbs. Lilies perform best in well-drained soils in full sun.

September is the best time to transplant peonies. This can be done by cutting the stems near ground level and then carefully digging around and under each plant, trying to keep as much of the root system as possible. Large peony clumps can be divided with a sharp knife and each division should have three to five buds. Replant with a hole big enough to accommodate the entire root system one to two inches below soil surface.
