A man is dead after an officer involved shooting near Wellman early Sunday morning. The incident is under investigation by the Division of Criminal Investigation. According to Iowa DCI, Saturday night the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a suicidal subject. At 9 p.m. deputies went to the residence of the subject, identified as 39-year-old Martin Francis Hammen, at 1149 Highway 22, Wellman. At that time deputies did not locate Hammen.

At approximately 1:14 a.m. Sunday deputies returned to the residence for a fire. Authorities found the residence and structures engulfed in flames. A white male was seen running north from the property , crossing Highway 22. Hammen shortly after walked out from a tree line with a handgun and propane torch. Authorities ordered Hammen to drop the gun, but he failed to comply with the orders. One deputy fired his service rifle, striking Hammen in the upper torso, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

The investigation is on going, KCII will provide more information as it becomes official.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident with assistance from the Washington County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Attorney General’s Office, State Fire Marshall Division, Washington Police Department, Keota Police Department and the Wellman Fire Department.

Wellman First Responders, Wellman Fire Department, Kalona Fire Department, Keota Fire Department, North Keokuk Fire Department, North English Fire Department and Washington County Ambulance responded to the incident.
