Rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons open this weekend. Both seasons will open on September 5th. Population of white tail rabbits is expected to be good this year, with numbers expected to be 50% higher than the average seen over the last ten years. Meanwhile the squirrel population generally follows acorn production according to Chad Dolan, Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Reesources.
Dolan says 2014 was a very good year for acorns, which means squirrel population should be good in 2015.
Dolan says the popularity of rabbit and squirrel hunting has fallen off over the years, but added, it’s a good, inexpensive way to introduce hunting to younger people.
