Approximately 185,000 Iowans 12 years old or older are dependent on or abused alcohol and 42,000 are dependent on or abuse illicit drugs. September is National Recovery Month and Sandy Durbala, development director with Prelude Behavioral Services, shares it celebrates those who are in recovery. She adds reaching out for recovery can be tough due to stigma and often establishing a support system is necessary for recovery.

In Iowa, according to a 2014 study, 52 percent of people admitted to substance abuse treatment reported alcohol as their primary problem, 25 percent it was methamphetamine and marijuana was third at 16 percent. She adds, recovery is not only helping those who are addicted but the community as a whole.
