A pivotal game atop the Class A District 6 standings takes place tonight in Winfield. The Wolves (4-0 overall; 2-0 Class A District 6) put their unblemished record on the line versus Southeast Iowa Super Conference North member the Lone Tree Lions (3-1 overall; 2-0 Class A District 6).

Entering play tonight, the Wolves and Lions are in a four way tie for the district lead with the Pekin Panthers (3-1 overall) and the WACO Warriors (2-2 overall). The two teams are among the most potent offenses in the district, both scoring more than 150 points through four games. Winfield-Mount Union has amassed 180 points, while the Lone Tree Lions have scored 154.

Lone Tree head football coach Chad Shield believes this week’s game will be won and lost in the trenches. “I think the game is going to come down to the physicality on the line of scrimmage.” Shield said, “I feel we are a physical football team and they are a physical football team. As most battles are, they are won and lost at the line of scrimmage.”

The showdown features two of the top running backs in the district. Lone Tree senior Jared Hudson leads the district with 685 yards, and is average a district best 7 yards per carry. W-MU senior Darren Hunter has the district fourth most rushing yards at 452 and has scored nine touchdowns through four games.

W-MU head coach Scott McCarty is excited to host such an important game inside the district. “It’s going to be a nice night for a football game, a big game between two quality programs.” McCarty said, “It’s going to be a great high school football atmosphere and we look forward to it.”

Kickoff of tonight’s Class A District 6 battle between the Wolves and Lions is set for 7 p.m. at Winfield-Mount Union High School. Listen tomorrow morning for scores of tonight’s high school football action.
