The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team played host to the opening pool play round of the 2015 Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament on Thursday night.
With five teams participating at the site it was New London who came away with the top spot in the standings and a perfect 4-0 record. West Burlington was second at 3-1, their lone loss coming to the New London Tigers. Winfield-Mt. Union took third place, going .500 on the night at 2-2. The Wolves opened the evening with a loss to West Burlington 14-21 and 15-21. WMU then rebounded for consecutive wins, defeating WACO 21-19 and 21-18 and beating Louisa-Muscatine 21-6 and 21-2. The Wolves ended their night with a loss to undefeated New London in straight sets by scores of 21-8 and 21-13.
On the night statistically the Wolves were led by Pearl Krieger-Coble with 15 kills, Caitlyn Jamison with 34 assists and Lauren Jamison with 33 digs. After tournament action WMU is 8-11 on the year, they advance to this weekend’s consolation bracket of the conference tournament to be held at Lone Tree High School beginning at 11AM. The Wolves will face Iowa Mennonite School in their opening match. Other participants at the site include Central Lee, WACO, Columbus, Van Buren, Wapello and the host Lady Lions.
The WACO Warrior volleyball team was also in action last night at Winfield-Mt. Union in the conference tournament. The Warriors finished 1-3 in tournament play. WACO was beaten in their first three matches of the night, first by New London 21-7 and 21-8, then falling to WMU 21-19 and 21-18, and the Warriors dropped a match to West Burlington in three sets 21-14, 11-21 and 15-12. WACO would end the night on a positive note beating Louisa-Muscatine 21-12 and 21-9.
Following their play on Thursday the Warriors will advance to the consolation tournament in Lone Tree Saturday. WACO will match up with area school Columbus in the first round of action.
