The Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ cross country teams saw their season come to an end Thursday in Fairfield. The Demons were competing in the Class 3A State Qualifying Race at Waterworks Park Fairfield against runners of 13 different regional schools.

Washington senior Emme Keith finished her high school cross country career just short of the state cutoff. Her run of 19:59.7 was the 18th best time in the field. She was just six seconds away from the state cutoff, and within a second of 16th place. Sophomore Brooke Stout finished her varsity season as the 45th best runner in the district field, clocking a time of 21:28. As a team, Washington finished in 10th place out of the 13-team field.

Washington’s boys’ team was led by a pair of cousins. Junior Owen Horak, and sophomore Brenna Horak ended the race neck and neck with Owen edging Brennan by one second. Owen Horak’s run of 18:04 was the 50th best in the field. Brennan Horak’s came in 51st with a time of 18:05. Washington took 12th place team in the field.

Mount Pleasant, Marion, and Cedar Rapids Xavier advanced to the Class 3A boys’ state run while Davenport Assumption, Fort Madison, and Marion advanced to the Class 3A girls’ state run.
