Forty-eight minutes of football will decide the Class 3A District 5 champion tonight in the Quad Cities. The No. 12 Washington Demon football team (7-1 overall; 5-0 Class 3A District 5) is set to square off tonight versus district foe the No. 10 Davenport Assumption Knights (6-2 overall; 5-0 Class 3A District 5).

Tonight’s opponent could be the best team they have faced since their week 1 loss to the No. 1 Pella Little Dutch, 42-24. Davenport Assumptions two losses this season have been by a single touchdown, losing 35-28 week 1 to Class 4A No. 2 Bettendorf and losing 14-7 to Class 3A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Xavier in week 2.

The Knights have rolled through district play, winning their first five games by an average of nearly 41 points per game. Assumptions’ average margin of victory the past three weeks has been 19 points over district opponents Mount Pleasant, Clear Creek-Amana, and Fairfield.

The Knights are led offensively by a pair of seniors. Joe Argo is the quarterback of Assumptions offense, leading the Knights in passing yards and rushing yards gained this season. His 1,865 yards of total offense gained is the second most in Class 3A District 5, trailing only Washington’s Ryan Reighard with 2,299 yards. Argo’s 17 touchdown passes are seven more than any other quarterback in the district.

Argo’s top target is senior Will Ontiveros, who is second in Class 3A District 5 with 37 receptions for 554 yards. His eight touchdown receptions are tied for the most in the district with Washington sophomore wide receiver Javionn Willis.

Washington enters the final game of the regular season with stout numbers as well inside district play. The Demons’ margin of victory over their first five district opponents has been 24.8 points per game. Reighard leads the district in rushing attempts (143), rushing yards (1,243), and rushing touchdowns (18). Willis enters tonight’s district showdown as the district’s leader with 41 receptions for 644 yards.

The two defenses bring stellar scoring totals into tonight’s district championship game. Davenport Assumption has allowed only 40 points during district play, while Washington has allowed 61.
