If you’ve had to fill up your car in the past week or so you have probably paid more than you have in a while. Gas prices, especially across the midwest, have taken a noticeable jump.

Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst for the website Gasbuddy.com, says refinery shutdowns have been the culprit. Statistics show that midwest refiners are using just 87 percent of their capacity as they do maintenance while demand is lower, that is 10 percent less than last month.

DeHaan tells KCII that even though prices have risen, they are still well below the peak price during this past summer, adding the good news is that refiners should be back up to near capacity in time for prices to fall prior to Thanksgiving.

The average price is Iowa stands at $2.52, with the lowest price in the state at $2.12 in Council Bluffs and the highest was $3.09 in Indianola. Lowest we could find in southeast Iowa was $2.34 at several locations in Mt. Pleasant and in Olds.
