A historic homecoming celebration takes place tonight for current and former students of the Highland Community School District. The district’s 50th homecoming football game takes place in rural Riverside as Highland Huskies (3-3 overall; 1-3 Class 1A District 6) hosts the Sigourney-Keota Cobras (3-3 overall; 2-1 Class 1A District 6).

The Huskies look to return to the winning side of the ledger, losing back-to-back district football games to the No. 1 Iowa City Regina Regals and to the Pella Christian Eagles. Junior Jake Wood ranks third in the district in passing yards with 706, and is tied for third in group in passing touchdowns with nine.

The Huskies defense will be asked to contain the top rusher in the District 6, and is among the top four running backs in Class 1A football. Sigourney senior Peyton Crawford leads the district wtih 1010 rushing yards on 95 attempts, averaging 10.6 yards every time he touches the football. His 14 rushing touchdowns are three more than any other athlete in the district. In last season season’s meeting, Crawford rushed for a career-high 381 yards and seven touchdowns in a 55-42 triumph over the Huskies in Sigourney.

Kickoff of tonight’s district bout between the Huskies and Cobras is set for 7 p.m. at Highland High School.
