First Lt. Charles W. Smith

Rations, black out driving, and Patton’s 3rd Army are all part of the setting while one couple’s love story is told in a play at the Washington Community Center this week. The play, titled My Father’s War, is based on letters sent home by one soldier in the Signal Corps during World War II. The play was created by Martha Johnson of Mt. Pleasant and it is a compilation of her father’s letters home to her mother during the war, with narration based on the company’s unit book.

The play is directed by Sally Hart and features a cast of Aaron Williamson, Ben Stanton and Alexandria Whitehall. Will Hart will sing the National Anthem to start the show.

Johnson says the historical show can be enjoyed by everyone, as it tells of a time when life was more difficult. The Washington Community Theater is presenting My Father’s War Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 18th, at 2:30 p.m.

In addition, F-troop Military Museum will have artifacts from WWII on display in the lobby. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at WCTheater.com, with a portion going to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
