Sections of the sewer system in Washington are being cleaned. Keith Henkel, engineering technician with the City of Washington, advises the cleaning is underway on the southeast side of the city and residents in the area are advised to keep their toilet lids down until the cleaning is complete. Cleaning can cause minor water splash in toilets.

Hydro-Klean has been contracted to do the work and will be doing so through the end of the calendar year. The sewer cleaning is being done in conjunction with inspections and videoing of the sewer lines following the cleaning.

Also, residents are advised the cleaning may cause sewer traps in homes to become dry. If a sewer smell is noticed, residents should run water in the sinks and flush the toilets several times to allow the traps to fill with water and operate properly.
