The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim in the shooting incident in Wapello on Wednesday night. The man has been identified as 66-year-old Stephen Ueltschy of Fort Dodge.
Authorities say they received a call from a Wapello resident who said someone holding a gun had approached him on the street in Wapello. During the incident a shot was fired into the air by the suspect. After receiving a description of the suspect, deputies, along with assistance from Columbus Junction police, stopped the vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle, Ueltschy pulled a firearm from the vehicle and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier in the afternoon the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office had been contacted by Fort Dodge police, saying Ueltschy was believed to be heading to Wapello and was armed and suicidal. No one else was injured in the incident.
