It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the WACO Warriors’ volleyball team (8-18) during Tuesday’s senior night match with Southeast Iowa Super Conference North member the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons (0-27).

After taking game one 25-17, the Warriors found themselves down 18-8 before head coach Jay Coble took a match changing time out. “At that timeout I got right into the face of my two outside hitters.” Coble said, “I told them listen ‘This is what we wanted out of you all season long. We want you to swing, we want you to swing line, and we want you to create offense for us.’ I bet two-thirds of their kills came after that timeout.”

The two outside hitters Coble was referring to are senior Cierra McCartor and junior Maymie Hihn. After the timeout, the duo led WACO on a 17-3 run, taking game two by a score of 25-21. The Warriors’ completed the sweep by upending the Falcons in game three, 25-13.

McCartor had a team-leading 11 kills in her final regular season match at Bob Hilmer Court. Hihn added an additional nine kills in the victory. Junior Hallie Kissel assisted on 21 points in the win.

WACO celebrated five seniors in their final regular season home match, including Brehannah Doonan, Angel Frier, McCartor, Katie Miles, and Libby Skriver.

The victory improves WACO’s overall record to 8-18. The Warriors enter postseason play next Tuesday, hosting the English Valley Bears (3-17 overall) in the Class A Region 7 tournament. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Bob Hilmer Court in Wayland.
