Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among Iowa women, following only lung cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2012, over 224,000 women and 2,125 men in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The Iowa Department of Public Health states early detection is important and it is recommended to have a mammogram every year, have a clinical breast exam by a health care provider and conduct monthly breast self exams.

During the month, the American Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to support cancer patients by giving blood. On October 15th, the Washington Optimist Club is hosting a community blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Washington United Presbyterian Church.
