A new season for the Columbus Wildcat girls’ basketball team (1-0 overall) got started on the right foot Tuesday evening in Wayland. The Wildcats traveled to Henry County for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North battle against the WACO Warriors (0-1 overall). Columbus held WACO to under five points in three of the four quarters played, coasting to a 40-14 victory over the Warriors.

Columbus jumped out to a 11-1 lead after the first quarter, extending it to 23-10 at halftime. The Wildcats outscored the Warriors 17-4 in the final half, including holding WACO scoreless in the third quarter, bringing the final score to 40-14.

Junior guard Shania Boyd outscored the Warriors, scoring a game-high 19 points including making six of her nine free throw attempts. Junior Bailey Stroud added eight points in the win.

The victory jumps Columbus out to a 1-0 start. The Wildcats return to the floor Tuesday hosting the Lone Tree Lions in a conference tilt.

The loss drops WACO to 0-1 overall. The Warriors return to the court Tuesday, entertaining the Mediapolis Bullettes (1-0 overall) at Bob Hilmer Court.
