Thirty-two minutes wasn’t enough time to decide Monday’s season opener outcome for the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team (1-0 overall). The Demons battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit, eventually overcoming the Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets (0-1 overall) in overtime, 38-34. The game featured nine lead changes and was tied five separate times.

Washington scored nine points total in the first half, recording just three points in the second quarter, to trail 18-9 at intermission. The Demons used a 16-3 third quarter run to jump ahead 25-21 entering the final quarter of regulation. Eddyville-Blakesburg edged Washington making the score 32-32 in the final quarter, but the Demons’ had a chance to win the game in regulation. Senior Brynna DeLong’s shot from the baseline at the buzzer bounced off the back iron twice before falling off the rim, sending the game into overtime.

Washington made the most of the extra period, outscoring Eddyville-Blakesburg 6-2 to take the season opener, 38-34.

All five seniors made a mark on the season opener, scoring five or more points in the victory. Addie Pacha led the Demons with nine points. Morgan Kimball and Amber Salow each scored seven points, and McKayla Miller and DeLong added five a piece in the triumph.

Washington record starts on the right foot 1-0 overall, winning the first game of Jordan Bentley’s coaching tenure. The Demons will return to the court next week, traveling to Solon to battle the Spartans on Saturday, December 5.
