The Mid-Prairie girls basketball team faced a tall task on Tuesday night, hosting No. 4 in class 4A Fairfield, but the Golden Hawks were competitive with one of the best in the state, falling a by a 63-50 final score.

Mid-Prairie took their only lead of the contest at 5-4 in the first quarter on a three pointer from Alex Rath. The Lady Trojans would build a 10-5 lead after that and hold an 11-10 advantage at the end of one quarter. In the second quarter it was a one possession game most of the way until a late Fairfield push gave the Trojans a 27-22 lead at the half.

In the second half Kylie Kurtz got hot for Fairfield, scoring the team’s first eight points, giving Fairfield it’s largest lead of the night at 35-22. The Golden Hawks closed the deficit to five on three separate occasions in the frame but would get no closer as the Trojans led 44-33 after three. In the fourth quarter Fairfield continued their great offensive night, posting 19 points and hitting their foul shots down the stretch to ice the game. The Trojans ended the night 18 of 22 at the stripe.

Fairfield had five players reach double figures in the game led by 14 points from Amber Nicole Buch, Sami Fritz and Kylie Kurtz each had 13 while Delaney Ridgway and Michaela Lunsford had 11 apiece. Mid-Prairie was led by Addison Rath and her career high 23 points, including eight in the third quarter alone. Alex Rath added 14 for the Golden Hawks. With the loss Mid-Prairie falls to 0-1 on the year. The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday night when they begin conference play by hosting Tipton.
