Many people are decorating their homes with garland and trees for the Christmas holiday, as Christmas is less than four weeks away. Evergreen trees are often used as Christmas trees in homes and according to horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, there is proper care for the trees to make them last longer. It is recommended to cut two diagonal cuts about one inch from the bottom of the trunk to help it with water uptake. A tree can use up to one quart of water per day in a warm room.

Keep trees supplied with fresh water and away from heat sources to decrease the tree drying out and help prevent risks of fire.

In 2010 across the United States, approximately 35 million natural Christmas trees were sold for about $210 million.
