Despite much misfortune last season, the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves girls’ basketball team returns several players who made impacts during the squad’s 3-19 campaign. W-MU returns five players who played over 40 quarters of varsity basketball last season, including Caitlin Jamison, an all-conference honorable mention selection from a year ago.

However, the Wolves top two scorers from last year have graduated, including starting point guard Karlie Wade. Wade won multiple postseason awards for her efforts during the 2014-15 season, averaging a team-high 13.8 points and 2.8 steals during her senior year.

Head coach Mitch Wachs says Wade’s scoring ability won’t be the only thing the Wolves will miss this season. He added she was also W-MU’s primary ball handler, having the ball in her hands 95 percent of the time she was on the floor. Wachs adds he is trying out junior Sophie Kongable for the starting point guard position this season. Kongable appeared in 19 games for the Wolves last season, scoring six total points.

The Wolves open up their girls’ basketball season Tuesday evening, traveling to rural Riverside for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North bout with the Highland Huskies.
