An improbable final drive led to an unexpected end to the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves (10-1 overall) 2015 football season. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, W-MU hosted the Lynnville-Sully Hawks (8-3 overall) in the second round of the Class A playoffs last night. The Hawks kicked a 27-yard field goal with 12.7 seconds left in the game, upsetting the undefeated Wolves 29-28. The game featured four lead changes and one tie.

The first quarter nearly expired before the first points were scored. Lynnville Sully senior Sage Ehresman scored a two yard touchdown run with 9.7 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Hawks led 7-0.

Winfield-Mount Union answered the touchdown with their lone rushing score. Junior Bryce Robinson found the endzone on a three-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead to 7-6 because of a failed two-point conversion.

The Wolves took their first lead nearly four minutes later when senior Kolt Rossister threw his first of three long touchdown passes. He connected with senior Zach Davis for a 71-yard touchdown reception, overtaking the lead 14-7 with a successful two-point attempt. W-MU took the touchdown advantage into halftime.

Lynnville-Sully opened the second half scoring with a 44-yard touchdown run by Ehresman, tying the game 14-14 with 6:13 showing on the third quarter. The score held into the fourth quarter.

The Hawks regained the lead early into the final quarter, scoring a 29-yard touchdown reception by Colten Armet to put Lynnville-Sully up, 20-14 with 11:46 remaining in the final quarter. W-MU answered one minute later with a 49-yard touchdown reception from Rossiter to senior Garrett Baker to take a 22-20 advantage. The Wolves closed their scoring on another long touchdown pass, a 79-yard pass and catch between Rossister and Baker, making the score 28-22 with 9:31 left in the game.

The Hawks responded Ehresman’s third and final touchdown of the game, a one yard scamper, cutting the lead to 28-26 with 2:57 showing in the fourth. The Wolves offense went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and the Hawks used two of their timeouts to regain possession of the football with under two-minutes remaining in the football game. The Hawk offense went on a nine play, 57 yard drive, setting themselves up for a field goal. Noah Engle kicked a 27 yard go ahead field goal, making the score 29-28 with 12.7 seconds left in the football game. A hail mary throw by Rossister was intercepted by Lynnville-Sully’s Kobe Fink, bringing the final score to 29-28.

W-MU finishes the 2015 season with a record of 10-1 overall.
