After analyzing flooding at the intersection of West 3rd Street and Marion Avenue near Fareway in Washington, engineers believe there is a cost effective way to alleviate some of the problem. Leland Belding with Veenstra and Kimm, Inc., spoke at this week’s Washington City Council meeting and presented a recommendation that would cost approximately $102,000 and help reduce the time and depth of ponding water at the intersection. A new 15-inch storm sewer approximately 661 feet long from the manhole at the intersection with North C Avenue to an intake in front of St. James Church would need to be constructed. Belding added the work could be done by city maintenance staff which would help lower the cost.

The council accepted the report and advised they would consider this option during budget sessions in early 2016.

Earlier this fall, a storm sewer study of West 3rd Street determined it would cost approximately $900,000 to resolve flooding issues due to depth and slope issues, as well as under-sized pipes.
